Hanging
Houseplants -
Add
a little lift to your plants indoors
If you thought
that the joys of hanging plants could only be experienced by those
with gardens and the room to hang baskets outside, then think again!
There are many varieties of houseplants that are ideal for hanging,
either individually or grouped together, and they can be used to
create stunning displays.
Containers
Containers suitable for hanging plants take many shapes and forms,
from simple plastic pots, to wicker, macramé holders, china
or even decorative metal pots or baskets. But theres no need
to stick to the list be creative and have fun exploring new container
ideas; as long as the container isnt too heavy, can accommodate
the plant and can be hung, it could work effectively. Hang safely
from metal hooks with chains or strong cords and ensure you leave
access for watering.
Plants
Choosing which plants to use can often be tricky as so many work
well in a hanging capacity. To help with the decision making, consider
where you plan to hang the plants, the size of the container, whether
you want color, foliage or both, and most importantly the fact that
you will be seeing the plants from below!
Trailers are
perfect and many well-known plants have a trailing variety; climbers
can also be used to climb upwards and add height. Commonly used
hanging houseplants include Streptocarpus, the ever-faithful Spider
Plant, Ivy Leaf Geranium, Italian Bell Flower, Ivies especially
the variegated varieties, Hotwater Plant, the trailing Asparagus
Fern, Pendulous Begonias and Mother of Thousands. If space is limited,
try a low hanging singular African Violet or Christmas Cactus.
For indoor hanging
arrangements, the plants can be placed into the container in their
pots, complete with saucers for drainage; ideally plant in a soilless
medium to reduce weight. Once ready, water, then place in a cool
area for a few days before hanging; water on a weekly basis or when
the plants look in need.
Hanging houseplants
can add interesting new dimensions to rooms they can improve the
look of previously empty corners, hide areas you dont want
on view, add color, variety and intrigue. But, above all, they provide
an ideal way of growing and enjoying plants in your home throughout
the year.
